Frequently asked questions

How high is Rainbow Mountain?

Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) sits at 5,036 meters (16,522 ft) above sea level — the highest point most travelers reach in the Cusco region. That is why we recommend doing this tour after at least 2 days of acclimatization in Cusco, which lies at 3,400 meters.

How difficult is the Rainbow Mountain hike?

The hike is moderate: about 5 km round trip (1.5–2 hours up) on a clear trail, but at extreme altitude, which makes it feel harder. If you prefer not to hike, horses can be rented along the route to carry you most of the way to the final stretch.

What time does the tour leave and how long does it take?

We leave Cusco between 4:00 and 5:00 am to arrive ahead of the crowds, with breakfast on the way. The hike takes up the morning and you are back in Cusco between 5:00 and 6:00 pm — a full day of roughly 13 hours.

What should I bring to Rainbow Mountain?

Dress in layers (it is freezing at dawn and at the summit): windbreaker, sunscreen, hat, gloves, water, snacks, and trekking shoes. In the rainy season (November to March) add a waterproof poncho. Coca leaves or coca candies help with the altitude.
