Quick answer: a 5-day trip to Cusco and Machu Picchu costs between ~US$ 600 backpacker-style and ~US$ 2,000+ in comfort mode, not counting your international flight. The big-ticket items are the Lima–Cusco flight, the train to Aguas Calientes, the entrance ticket (~S/ 152) and your hotel; food and day tours are surprisingly affordable.
The three budget styles
There is no single “price” for visiting Machu Picchu: the same itinerary can cost three times as much depending on how you sleep, eat and get around. To compare clearly, we work with three traveler profiles:
- Backpacker: shared hostel dorm, set-menu lunches, basic tourist train and group tours. Spend little without missing the essentials.
- Mid-range: 3-star hotel near the center, a mix of local and tourist restaurants, panoramic-window train and organized tours with hotel pickup.
- Comfort: 4-5 star hotel, à la carte dining, upper-category train, private guides and door-to-door logistics.

Domestic flights: Lima–Cusco
Almost every international traveler arrives via Lima and takes the ~1h20 flight to Cusco. Booked weeks ahead, the round trip usually costs ~US$ 60 to US$ 150 on local airlines; on peak dates (Inti Raymi, national holidays, July-August) it can double. Book this flight as soon as your dates are set — it is the most volatile price of the whole trip.
Cusco hotels: what a night costs
- Backpacker: dorm bed, ~US$ 10-18 per night; simple private room, ~US$ 25-35.
- Mid-range: 3-star hotel a few blocks from the Plaza de Armas, ~US$ 40-70 per night.
- Comfort: boutique or 4-5 star hotel, from ~US$ 100-250 per night.
A budget trick: in Cusco, location matters more than stars. Staying 5-10 minutes’ walk from the plaza saves you daily taxis and lets you enjoy the city at night.
Ticket, train and bus: the core expense
The Machu Picchu block is the most expensive and least negotiable part of the trip. The general entrance ticket costs ~S/ 152 (~US$ 40) for foreign adults — always verify the current amount on the official site, tuboleto.cultura.pe. The train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes runs from ~US$ 60-90 round trip on the basic tourist service to ~US$ 130-180 on panoramic-window services. The shuttle bus from Aguas Calientes up to the citadel gate adds ~US$ 24 round trip. An organized full-day tour, like our Machu Picchu by train tour, bundles ticket, train, bus, guide and transfers into one price and often works out the same or better than piecing it together in high season.
Food: from set menus to fine dining
Eating in Cusco is where every dollar stretches furthest. A set-menu lunch at a local restaurant costs ~S/ 12-20 (about US$ 4-6) and includes soup, a main dish and a drink. At tourist restaurants downtown, a main course runs ~US$ 8-15. Cusco’s fine-dining scene, which rivals Lima’s, ranges ~US$ 30-60 per person. Realistic daily budget: ~US$ 12-15 backpacker, ~US$ 25-40 mid-range, ~US$ 60+ comfort.

Day tours from Cusco
Group day tours are cheap compared to everything else: the Sacred Valley, Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake or the city tour usually cost ~US$ 20-45 per person with transport and guide included (entrance fees are sometimes extra). In a 5-day trip you can comfortably fit two or three tours besides Machu Picchu.
Total budget: 5 days in numbers
| Item (5 days / 4 nights) | Backpacker | Mid-range | Comfort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lima–Cusco flight (round trip) | ~US$ 70 | ~US$ 110 | ~US$ 150 |
| Hotel (4 nights) | ~US$ 50 | ~US$ 220 | ~US$ 600 |
| Machu Picchu block (ticket + train + bus + guide) | ~US$ 150 | ~US$ 250 | ~US$ 450 |
| Food (5 days) | ~US$ 70 | ~US$ 160 | ~US$ 300 |
| 2 day tours + extras | ~US$ 80 | ~US$ 150 | ~US$ 350 |
| Approximate total | ~US$ 420-650 | ~US$ 900-1,400 | ~US$ 1,900-2,500+ |
All amounts are approximate, exclude your international flight and vary with season and exchange rate: treat them as orders of magnitude and always verify current rates with the official sources before booking.
How to save without sacrificing the experience
- Travel in shoulder season (April, October-November): same landscapes, cheaper flights and hotels.
- Book the domestic flight and the train 4-8 weeks ahead.
- Have set-menu lunches and save tourist restaurants for one or two dinners.
- Bundle Machu Picchu and your tours into a package: a 4-day, 3-night Cusco package usually costs less than adding up each piece separately.
